Protecting Car Owners from the unscrupulous garage or mechanic

If you own a car, truck or other vehicle, the chances are that, at some point, you have had to take it into a garage for a repair or a service. If it is a local garage that services your car, the chances are, if it is a garage with whom you have built a relationship or which has a good reputation locally, you don't have too many concerns about what they will do.

The biggest concern is when you take the car into a "specialist" company dealing with brakes, mufflers (exhaust systems for our Brit readers!) or garages where you are not a regular customer. Maybe you are on a trip and something goes wrong meaning a visit to an unknown garage in an unfamiliar town.

Many people think that big-name muffler and brake franchises must be good because there are branches everywhere. Regrettably this can be far from the truth. If you have ever been in any of the following situations, then this is the website for you!

Have you ever gone in to have a muffler changed, anticipating a small bill and been sold lots of extras you were not expecting? Learn how muffler shops can take advantage of you.

How about new brakes. You go into the garage expecting to pay a moderate amount for new brake pads. Then you find that " for safety perhaps you should have the rotors machined" and "your disc brakes need new calipers" and before you know it your $100 job has escalated to $500.

And why is that? Because the garages rely on two major factors. Customer ignorance and Fear. Check through this site and learn from a trade insider "The Juke of URL" what goes on behind the scenes and many of the things garages do not want you to know.

Why do we call this web site womensgarage.com?

Because too many garages and mechanics look upon female drivers as non-technical in their knowledge, and easy marks to part from their money.

They can try to baffle you with technical jargon, suggest that certain things need to be changed, mended, adjusted and for the most part, many women and men don't know whether they are being told the truth or spun a lie.

And why is that? Because we look upon garage mechanics who work on cars and trucks, as experts. It's their job so we assume (quite often the biggest mistake we make) that they know what they are doing.

A Canadian TV programme called W5 does investigative TV stories which blow the lid of various companies and organizations. They have done at least two of these programmes on garages and car mechanics. This is what they do.

They take a vehicle, have it thoroughly checked to make sure it is in perfect running order and then create a problem. It could be as simple as a loose battery connection providing intermittent power, or they might switch leads on two spark plugs, or disconnect a wire so that a problem is created.

A miniature camera is concealed in the hood (bonnet for you Brits!) which records everything that the mechanic does when inspecting the engine and searching for the fault. The TV programme shows how some mechanics found the fault quickly and, in the odd case, didn't even charge for the work. Others, on the other hand, billed for all sorts of work not even related to the fault and then blustered like mad when confronted with what the camera had recorded.

It is from these types of garages and mechanics we want to protect you!
