Half the garages in Britain are ripping off motorists with sloppy repairs, investigators found. Drivers are being charged for shoddy workmanship, unnecessary repairs and items that are not even fitted. Only 10 out of 48 garages visited in an undercover investigation provided high quality service, and half failed to spot faults which could leave a driver behind the wheel of a dangerous vehicle.

The findings come as the Office of Fair Trading is conducting a top-level inquiry into the industry. It is expected to lead to proposals to drive rogue repairers out of business. The report in "Which" consumer magazine, says: " Standards are generally dire. The results of our undercover sting investigation make damning reading with half of the garages in our survey poor or very poor. This remains a major problem."

Last year trading standards officers received a record 27,381 complaints involving servicing and repairs.

• Investigators found garages that charged for filters they did not replace.

• Others missed several faults which included a tire with a deep cut in the sidewall and a large nail in it.

• Another garage supposedly performed a 35 point check and did nothing but change the oil and filter and charged the customer $ 220.00 for the service.

• Another wanted to do $180.00 worth of front brake work, when there was absolutely nothing wrong.

" Consumers expecting a better deal from manufacturer backed garages will be in for a shock. The brand name means nothing but higher prices. " said the report.
